Gr. 7/8 Farewell Note 2017 & Important Dates

May 23rd , 2017

Dear Parents,

The Grade 8 Farewell is a celebration of the end of one phase in a student’s education and the beginning of a new one.  This celebration can only take place if school and community are willing to work together.   This year the Grade 8 Farewell is scheduled for Tuesday, June 20th from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.  Teachers, parents, and administration have already begun preparations.  We are now asking for your assistance.

A reception will follow the formal part of the celebration.  We need the Grade 7 students and parents to help with the organization of the reception.  Grade 7 parents are asked to look after the dainties (please send nut free), fruit trays/ vegetable trays to be collected and served at the reception. For the reception to be a success, we need approximately three to four parents to oversee the preparations.

Grade 7 Parents- It is important to note here that next year it will be your child transitioning from Jack MacKenzie School to the various high schools.  You and your child will then sit back and enjoy the celebrations without a concern as the Grade 7 students and parents, at that time, will be volunteering to ensure that you have a memorable evening.  Please help out in any way you can. We need to have one or two parents volunteer to be the point of contact for the Grade 7 parents and to organize the evening reception.  The volunteer(s) will need to be at the school the day of the Farewell, setting up the reception, and continuing to oversee the reception.   Please return completed forms by May 30th, 2017 to your child’s homeroom teacher.

* Please send food items to the school the morning of Tuesday, June 20th by 9:00 a.m.

Sincerely,

K. Reoch, A. Scott, K. DuMont, and K. Yeske

Milk Cards

MILK CARDS

Wednesday, March 22nd, 2017
As of next week, the Jack Mack Milk Committee will be introducing Milk Cards!

With each new purchase of 10 or 20 milk credits, students will receive card. (Note: Families can purchase as many cards at a time as they wish.)

Students will be responsible for keeping these. The milk cards should stay in their lunch kits so they do not get lost AND so parents can see when a new card needs to be purchased.

More information: Purchase and distribution of milk will remain the same. Students will bring their milk card to the Milk Volunteer to receive milk each day. Lost cards will not be replaced.

Students will receive their milk card(s) on with their current milk credits and for any new purchases made in the meantime. For any purchases made after Monday, March 27th, milk cards will be distributed every Monday.

We look forward to this new system and hope it benefits everyone!

Questions can be forwarded to Mrs. Riou at jaime.riou@rbe.sk.ca .

Sincerely,
Jack Mack Milk Committee

Refunds for Mission Ridge Ski/Snowboarding Trip

Dear Parents/Guardians,
Due to the cancellation of the Mission Ridge ski/board trip, any money that was paid on-line has been refunded. The refunds occurred on Monday, March 27, 2017.  It now has to go through the “Kev” accounting system to be processed, which we expect should be done by early this week.  The refund would be applied to the credit card/my Wallet, or whatever method in which the trip was initially paid for.  For any students that paid cash, the homeroom teacher would be in charge of refunding the student.

Grade 8 Yearbook

Grade 8 Yearbook

Thank you for your feedback in February.  We had lots of families interested in a Grade 8 yearbook and are now ready for each student to create their “about me” page.

To make it easy for each student to create their personal page, we have created a template in Mixbook, which we will share with each family early next week.

If you did not return your February survey answer via email, please send a quick email within the next few days to jmac.yearbook@gmail.com - so that we have your email address and can share the template with you.  Please include your student’s name in the email.

Once you receive the template (which will be a Mixbook invitation to collaborate on a project), you will need to create a Mixbook account (if you do not already have one), and will be able to upload your student’s photos, then drag and drop them into the template.  Detailed instructions will be provided, but the process is quite simple and we really hope that each student will take the time to create their page so that the finished book includes our entire grade 8 graduating class.

We plan to also include pages highlighting our student’s experiences during their years at Jack Mackenzie, but need your assistance for this.  If you have any good photos from Jack Mac field trips, Christmas concerts, music concerts, sports practices/games, etc., please email the photos to jmac.yearbook@gmail.com & include the grade/class taken. We hope to have enough photos to include pages of photos & memories from each of the past grades (K – Gr 7) as well as this grade 8 year in the yearbook.  We would also greatly appreciate any photos of Mr. Mackenzie and of the Jack Mac staff over the years.

We ask that these two items be completed by April 30th.  If you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to email jmac.yearbook@gmail.com or ask one of the student classroom representatives.

Thank you for your assistance!

Celebration of Learning - Wednesday, March 22nd, 2017

March 13, 2017

Celebration of Learning – Student-led Conference

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Conference time is quickly approaching. This an important part of our school’s evaluation and reporting process. We invite you to attend a Celebration of Learning, which is a student-led conference that will take place on March 22, 2017 from 4:00 – 6:00 PM.

The goal of Celebration of Learning is to offer concrete and meaningful examples of your child’s progress. This type of conference provides students with an opportunity to assume responsibility for informing their parents of how they are doing while engaging them in communicating the learning process. Your child will lead you through a variety of activities that have been designed to help him/her demonstrate their progress in various subject areas.

It is not necessary to have a set schedule for this type of conference, as several students can go through the activities at the same time.  Teachers will be present in the classroom to answer any questions that you may have.

Celebration of Learning typically takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.  Should your child’s teacher feel that it is necessary to have a more in-depth meeting, they will contact you.  The morning of Friday, March 24, 2017 has been set aside for these meetings.  As always, if you would like to meet with your child’s teacher feel free to contact the school at any time.

We hope you will be able to join us for this opportunity to celebrate your child’s growth and development!

Sincerely,

Russ Clarke
Principal

Attention Parents: Note for Holocaust Movies on Friday, February 17th, 2017

At the end of last week, a note was sent home regarding the movie we plan to watch on Friday.  Students who plan to watch Schindler's List, need to return the signed note from a parent or guardian, indicating consent to see this movie.  The alternative to watching Schindler's List is another movie, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.  This is based on the novel by the same title; one of the novels that was studied in the literacy groups that we are now just finishing with.  This movie is rated PG 13 and while it still explores the very upsetting topic of the Holocaust, it is considered less intense.  If this is your movie of choice, please just indicate so on the note or by email.

Schindler's List Note - Please return form no later than Wednesday, February 15th, 2017. Thank You!

February 9, 2017,

Dear Parents:

As we complete our holocaust unit in E.L.A., we would like to show the movie “Schindler’s List”. The movie fits nicely as a culminating activity to the Literature Circles we have studied.  We will be watching the movie Friday, February 17th, 2017.

Schindlers List   14-A
Arguably Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece, this gripping adaptation of Thomas Keneally’s novel tells a story of Oscar Schindler (Neeson), a German industrialist who saved upward of 1,100 Jews from the Nazi death camps by employing them in his factory during the war. This film won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1993.

The movie has some nudity, which would be fast-forwarded.  There are some graphic scenes of WWII and life in concentration camps.

The students must bring this form back with a parent signature giving approval to watch this movie.  If for any reason you would not want to let your son/daughter watch this movie, simply state this below.  An alternate activity will be provided for students not watching the movie.  If you have any questions/concerns, feel free to call the school at 306-791-8585.

Sincerely,

Kevin Yeske
Kelley Reoch
Angela Scott

Gr. 8 Yearbook

Grade 8 Yearbook

Hello Grade 8 students and families.  It’s hard to believe that this is your last year at Jack Mackenzie!  To help remember you time together here, we would like to know if you would be interested in ordering a yearbook and would ask your assistance in collecting photos for the book.

We would be using www.mixbook.com to create the yearbook.   Books would be available mid July so that photos from the graduation ceremony, trip, and remaining school year can be included.  The approximate cost would be $40 per book (based on at least 20 students ordering a 60 page book).

Before we proceed, we are wondering how many students would be interested in ordering a yearbook.  Can you please either complete the bottom portion of this letter to show your interest and return it to your teacher, or send an email to jmac.yearbook@gmail.com, by February 9th, advising YES or NO?

To create the yearbook, we would also need some help from each student/family:

We plan to include classroom photos from K to Gr 8 as well as photos from various extra-curricular activities, sports, & field trips that our students have participated in through the years, etc.   If you have photos from chaperoning a Jack Mac field trip, Christmas concerts, music concerts, sports practices/games, etc, which you are willing to share, please email them to jmac.yearbook@gmail.com (please also advise during which year/grade the photo was taken).  Any photos which include Mr. Mackenzie would be greatly appreciated!

We would also like each student to create one page containing photos/info “about me”.  This page might contain 6-10 photos including:
-          Baby/toddler photos
-          Kindergarten/grade 1 photo as well as photos through the years
-          Photos showing student’s extra-curricular activities/other hobbies/interests
-          Student Q & A (eg. Favorite memories of Jack Mackenzie school, favorite memories of Mr Mackenzie, favorite activities/hobbies, what I want to do when I graduate, etc….)                  (more details to follow)

There are a couple of ways each student would be able to complete this “about me” page:
1)     Preferred option - If the household has or is willing to create a free Mixbook account, the yearbook committee would share a template page, which the student can complete, then share back to the committee.
2)     If any households are not able to create a free Mixbook account, they can email photos/info for their student’s “about me” page.  We will upload the photos to Mixbook and one of our yearbook committee members can assist the student to create their page, or create it for them.
We hope that with a small contribution from each family, we can create a book of memories that each of our students can treasure for years.

Our Grade 8 teachers will also be looking for a couple students from each classroom who would be interested in helping to create the yearbook.

To help us anticipate how many families would be interested in purchasing a yearbook, please complete the form below by indicating YES or NO to the question below (or email your answer to jmac.yearbook@gmail.com)

Thank you!
