Why Do We Wear a Poppy?

Dear Jack MacKenzie Families:


As you are all aware, November 11 is Remembrance Day.

On November 11, 1918 at 11:00 am, the First World War came to an end.  It lasted over four years, killed or injured nearly 30 million military personnel and devastated some of the world’s biggest empires.  It changed the future of people, countries and continents.  Canada’s contribution was significant, unprecedented and costly.  The country came out proud and victorious, while mourning the loss or injury of 250,000 Canadians.  Throughout November, we REMEMBER.

We honour those men and women who fought in various conflicts, so we are able to live in a country that is safe and free.  The poppy is a symbol associated with Remembrance Day and shows that we are thinking about and honouring those who bravely fought for us.  It is important that everyone knows the meaning of wearing a poppy. 

As a sign of respect for our veterans, everyone at Jack MacKenzie School will be provided with a poppy to wear for Remembrance Day.  We are asking all students to bring a Toonie donation for this poppy prior to the Remembrance Day ceremony which will be held on Wednesday, November 9, 2016.  If every student brought just $2.00 for their poppy, our school would raise over $800.00 for our veterans.  Let’s all work together to show honour and appreciation for our veterans.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Together, Mrs. Reoch’s, Mrs. Scott’s, Mr. DuMont’s and Mr. Yeske’s Grade 7/ 8 classes will be going skating this year. The date and time are as follows:

              1. Thursday, November 3rd, 2016 -Mrs. Reoch & Mrs. Scott 12:45-3:30 PM.

   Monday, November 14th, 2016 -Mr. DuMont & Mr. Yeske 12:45-3:3 PM.

              2. Tuesday, January 24^th, 2017- Mrs. Reoch & Mr. DuMont 12:45-3:30 PM.

    Wednesday, February 1^st, 2017- Mr. Yeske & Mrs. Scott 12:45-3:30 PM.

We will be traveling to the Murray Balfour Arena skating rink by bus.  The bus will leave at 12:45 PM and return at 3:30 PM. The total cost for transportation is $6.25 per student for two skating sessions per classroom.  Please pay on-line. Thank you!

 

As the students will be on the ice for two hours, they should dress warmly including mittens or gloves. Any students wishing to play hockey or games on the ice must wear a helmet.

Students are allowed to bring money to purchase hot chocolate or a drink.

The SLC (Student Leadership Council) is having some Spooktacular events for the Students of Jack MacKenzie for the week of October 24^th-31^st.

For the Week of Oct 24^th -28^th the SLC is having a United Way Summer Success Literacy Program Fundraiser. We are selling tickets for a chance to win 1 of 10 baskets and pumpkins that goes with the baskets. The Baskets are a $50 value each or more.  Tickets are 4 for $1.00.

Friday October 28^th is our Halloween Howl Dance in the P.M.!  It costs $2.00 to enter the dance and all proceeds will go to the United Way Summer Success Literacy Program Fundraiser! There will be a canteen with awesome treats to purchase. Chocolate Bars, Chips, Jammers, Nerd Ropes, Ring Pops, are all $1.00 Twizzlers are 4 for a $1.00 and Pop is $2.00 for Grade 6-8’s. 

Monday October 31^st the SLC will be having a Haunted House Tour in the P.M. The Cost is $2.00 per child. All the Proceeds will go to the United Way Summer Success Literacy Program Fundraiser. Thanks for supporting your SLC!

OurSCHOOL-Tell Them From Me Survey 2016

Dear Parent/Guardian,

As part of our focus on school effectiveness, Jack MacKenzie will be participating in an online school survey for students – OurSCHOOL.

OurSCHOOL is an online survey that allows students to give their feedback and share their voices on their school environment, experiences at school, and any school improvement programs.  During Monday, October 17^th-Friday October 21^st, all students will be given the opportunity and time to participate in this survey during regular school hours. They are encouraged to complete the survey, but may choose not to as it is completely voluntary. Students who agree to complete the survey will be given a random username and password to access and complete the survey. Students’ names cannot be linked to their responses which allows it to be completely anonymous. Results will show all student scores combined together – it is not possible to single out individual students in the results.

The student survey will be completed electronically and will require approximately 35-40 minutes to complete. The student survey Measures include such topics as emotional and social well-being, physical health, and behaviours and attitudes linked to student success. The survey also allows students to give their thoughts and feedback in open-ended question responses.

OurSCHOOL was created by The Learning Bar, based on the work by Dr. J. Douglas Willms. Dr. Willms is widely known nationally and internationally for his work on educational monitoring systems, including the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. Since 2004, OurSCHOOL has quickly grown to become Canada’s largest national school survey.
